I confess I love books. I have a small library at home. But once in a while, I got hold of business books that grab my attention and keep my interest.

The One Thing of Gary Keller is one of them. My wife, who works for an insurance company, bought it as recommended in one of their trainings. I love it!

The Big Idea – What I Love Most About The One Thing by Gary Keller?

hamster in wheels - running but not going anywhere

We live in a super busy world. Too much things to do with very little time. We feel dizzy. We are running in circles like hamsters in a wheel. Too much activity but it seems we are going nowhere.

More than ever we need more focus.

More than ever we need to let of the average to focus on the best.

Why You Need  “The One Thing” To Succeed?

Here is a short but very good video why focusing on many things can make you fail and why you need to learn to focus on one thing to succeed.

Why Less is More?

Focus - Magnifying GlassFew years ago, I listened to a very good program from Darren Hardy, The Compound Effect. This is what I got.

Success is not doing 1,000 things. Success is doing few things well 1,000 times.

It is all about focus. A light when focused into one wavelength becomes a powerful laser. Sun rays will not do much until you use a magnifying glass to focus and use it to burn.

What People Say About The One Thing?

“There is beauty in simplicity; in nature, art, business, science and everything in between.
Simplicity recognizes the important thing while ignoring the trivial things. Simplicity makes you more efficient and more effective simultaneously.”

“The One Thing by Gary Keller is a quick overview of simplicity. Keller is the founder of one of the largest real estate companies in the world and the author of several successful books. Keller draws on his profitable experience and shares his simple secret to success.”  – Reid McCormick

“This week Gary and co-author Jay Papasan publishes their next book — The ONE Thing. I had an opportunity to read an advance copy and there is no doubt that this book will surge to the top New York Times best seller list this month!

In an information overload and multi-tasking world their message is clear and single-minded. You have to FOCUS on ONE thing. Extraordinary results are directly determined by how narrow you can make your focus. Of course for most of us that is really hard to do. Distractions and popular philosophies are often the reasons why we think we can’t or didn’t succeed.” – S. J. Swanepoel

Hi Jeff, that is interesting concept. I haven’t read the book yet. I guess by doing one thing you can more focus on it but on the other hand by doing more things at the same time you can learn quicker and apply this knowledge for future goals.

    Hi Elektra,
    Thanks for the comments.
My experience tells me that I am more productive when I do one thing at a time compared to doing multi-tasking. 🙂

Interesting concept. It’s difficult to keep focused on one single idea, especially with computers which allow you to do 1000 tasks at the time.

Wonderful information, as a single mother I’m never really able to focus on one thing at a time. I’m always all over the place for some reason. At the end of my day I’m usually left with an unfinished task. I don’t like it but I’m also kinda used to it. But, the information you provided makes so much sense. The video was amazing, a real eye opener. Thank you!

Jeff,

OMG! When I listened the the video review, I thought, “That’s just like me!” I want to write, I want to learn to draw, I want to fish for bass, I want to travel, I want to blah-blah-blah!”

FOCUS! That’s what I get most for the review.

Awesome insight. And this sounds like a real winner.

BTW, I was a magician (I’ve done TOO MANY things!), and I remember a story told about a great magician. An amateur met the magician, and said, “I can do 325 card tricks. How many can you do?”

The magician replied, “I can only do 7 card tricks. But I do those 7 cards tricks better than anyone else in the world.”

Thanks for reminding me I need to focus!

I’m sure this book will help me accomplish that.
